Don Bailey inaugurates Kansas Colloquia for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

A researcher whose groundbreaking long term study of children with the fragile X syndrome is pointing to earlier identification and treatment is the first speaker of the Kansas Colloquia for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Donald Bailey, director of the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will discuss findings from the Carolina Fragile X Project in Fragile X Syndrome: Early Identification, Early Development, and Early Intervention at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, at the Computer Center Auditorium across the street from the Dole Center at 1001 Sunnyside Avenue.

The Colloquia is sponsored by the Life Span Institute, the Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Research Center, the Institute for Child Development, the Center for Reproductive Sciences, the Beach Center on Disability, the Juniper Gardens Children's Project, and the Kansas University Center on Developmental Disabilities.

New task force starts work on new promotion tracks

The Annual Evaluation Criteria Task Force, chaired by Ed Zamarripa, convened on March 6 to recommend new and improved ways to evaluate and promote LSI unclassified staff.

The committee will consider promotion tracks for scientific, research and managerial staff and how to evaluate staff for promotion. The committee is expected to make its recommendations by July 1 and changes will be adopted to affect staff evaluations and promotions beginning fiscal year 2003.

Committee members are: Jim Budde, RTC/IL director emeritus; Charlie Greenwood, Juniper Gardens director; Debra Montagna, Parsons research assistant; Betty Smith, Juniper Gardens program assistant; Dave Lindeman, Parsons LSI director; Susan Jack, Parsons LSI research assistant; Cindy Roberts, LSI program assistant and Karen Henry, LSI communication coordinator.

Technology Task Force to solicit PI comment on Computer and Media Services Strategic Plan

The Tech Task Force, chaired by Charlie Greenwood, will circulate a final draft of its Computer and Media Services Strategic Plan to Institute PIs for comment in April. The Task Force will also invite PIs to discuss the plan further with Task Force members at meetings in Parsons, Lawrence, and Juniper Gardens PIs will get the Plan and meeting dates by April 5. The Task Force anticipates presenting the final Plan to Steve Warren on April 19.

Steve Warren joins NICHD Initial Review Group

Steve Warren has been invited to serve on the Mental Retardation Research Subcommittee of the NICHD Initial Review Group from July 1, 2002, through June 30, 2006. This subcommittee advises the acting director of NIH and the director of NICHD on research in mental retardation and has the primary responsibility for reviewing applications for mental retardation centers, program project grants, and national research service awards relating to research and manpower in the field of mental retardation. The subcommittee also performs concept clearance review of contract projects in the MRDD branch of the Center for Research for Mothers and Children. Congratulations Steve!

Janet Marquis, Nancy Brady promotions

Janet Marquis, director of the Research Design and Analysis Unit, and Nancy Brady, research assistant professor, have both been promoted to the post of associate scientist with the Institute. Congratulations Janet and Nancy!

KDHE Director of the Office of Injury and Disability Programs to begin Gerontology doctoral program Fall 2002 semester

Julie F. Sergeant, who currently directs the Office of Injury and Disability Programs for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, will begin a doctoral program with the Gerontology Department in the fall semester. Sergeant was also associated with the Beach Center on Disability and the Language Acquisition Preschool, as well as the Peace Corps in the Republic of Congo. Her achievements in these and other roles were cited for awarding her the prestigious four-year Madison and Lila Self Graduate Fellowship, which provides for tuition, fees, and a generous stipend. Welcome back, Julie!

Workshops on Bootstrap Techniques in Psychological and Behavioral Science set for May 10

Research Design and Analysis will hold two statistics workshops on Friday, May 10 (KU Stop Day) in the Big 12 Room of the Kansas Union, times (TBA). The topic of the workshops is the application of bootstrap techniques to psychological and behavioral science data.

Bootstrap techniques are especially useful for inferential procedures when the assumptions for standard tests are not met, e.g., the assumption of normality. Bootstrap techniques are also used with increasing frequency in multiple comparison situations.

Norton Utilities update

Most of the NU2002 installs I've done over the last couple of weeks have had the WinDoctor set to auto-start the program on the first Monday of the month at 8 AM. When the program starts click the NEXT button. After the diagnostics have been run, click the NEXT button. On the next window, click the FINISH button. On the next window, click the REPAIR ALL button. There will be a popup and you should click the YES button. When the repairs have been made close the window and you are done. It all takes about 5 minutes.

The SpeedDisk (hard drive defragmentation) program is set to auto-start on the first Monday of the month at 4:50 PM. When the program starts click the START button. Click the YES button and leave the computer running for the night.

For those of you running Windows 2000 or WindowsXP the same instructions apply for the WinDoctor program, but for the SpeedDisk program there is no interaction required, just leave your computer running over night on the first Monday of the Month and it will run.
