Chambí's Indian roots also allowed him access to the other side of the social divide, and he made numerous trips into the countryside to document Indian culture and lifestyles. Today, Chambí's photos constitute a poignant record of an ancient civilization under the influence of European colonization. In addition to featuring some of Chambí's most stunning photos, the film includes interviews with Chambi's daughters, coworkers, and associates. Directed by Paul Yule and Andy Harries. (#117)

CHILE : ¿HASTA CUáNDO? 1987. Nominated for an Academy Award, this film looks back to the violence of 1973 in which Chile 's military, backed by the United States , overthrew the government of Salvador Allende, replacing it with the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet. It is the Pinochet government's harsh, repressive measures that are recorded in this searing documentary. The film crew risked their lives to capture this story of indiscriminate arrests, military intimidation, brutal murders and disappearances, all taking place while Chile 's elite enjoyed the good life. The contrasts are everywhere. Well-dressed society figures sip champagne at a John Denver concert while on the streets police brutally disperse a group of women petitioning for aid. (#186)

CHILE , OBSTINATE MEMORY 58 mins. 1997. For this new film Patricio Guzmán has returned to Chile , bringing with him a print of THE BATTLE OF CHILE. His landmark documentary toured the world – but was never seen in Chile itself. The memory of those times was largely barred from the collective consciousness of the Chilean people, and a generation of young Chileans has now grown up with little knowledge of the historical facts surrounding Allende's "Popular Unity" government, or of the military coup that ended it. With democracy restored to the country, Guzmán believes that the time has come to revisit the forgotten history, and to explore the terrain of the confiscated (but maybe reawakening) memories of the Chilean people. (#236)

THE CHINAMPAS. 31 mins. 1990. This multidisciplinary documentary examines an ecologically sustainable system of agriculture that has flourished in Mexico for some 2,000 years. The video employs graphics, live action, and commentary by chinampa farmers to show how the phenomenally productive chinampa system works. It also shows how the growth and pollution problems of Mexico City threaten the survival of the remaining chinampa farmers. (#115)

CILANTRO Y PEREJIL. 90 mins. 1997. This movie is heart-warming, entertaining, contemporary comedy about couples within the same middle class family that are stricken by crisis… leading to the philosophical and practical questions: Is it worthwhile to stay together? COFFEE BREAK. 27 mins. Next to oil, coffee is the most important commodity in the world. Millions of cups are consumed daily around the world. Yet few people know anything about the cost of the product in human and environmental terms. This documentary was filmed during the coffee harvest on a farm near the border between Nicaragua and Honduras . Here the conditions are almost feudal. The work starts at 12:30 at night and continues until six the next evening. On a good day, the best of the pickers can earn up to three dollars, but most of the women and children earn half that much. Children as young as eight are out in the fields to add to their family's income. In addition to the back-breaking labor, the workers are exposed to pesticides that are harmful both to themselves and the environment. Even though coffee prices are increasing, conditions of the farm workers in their marginal existence do not change. (#331)

CONGA LESSONS AT THE BAY OF PIGS. 52 minutes. 2003. In December of 2002, three filmmakers from Florida traveled to Cuba . their purpose was to immerse themselves in a culture with which the US government has all but totally prohibited commercial and cultural contact. In Havana , the men stayed in what is known in Cuba as a "Casa Particular" or private home. Later they headed south with a driver to the Bay of Pigs and the cities of Trinidad de Cuba and Santa Clara . Their final destination, however, was Santiago de Cuba , where they were to stay at another "Casa Particular" this one owned by Cesar. In fact, Cesar had invited the travelers to his family's holiday feast and, while the island's Afro-Cuban music dominates the first two-thirds of the documentary, it is this Christmas Day in Cuba spent with Cesar that gives these 52 minutes an unexpected and memorable weight. Here the filmmakers realized that it is impossible for Americans to visit Cuba only for its music. Here Cuban-American politics is the subtext of everything. Here, the storied Bay of Pigs invasion is recalled (along with its aftermath on the Cuban people, continuing now for over forty-two years) and is carved into memory forever. (#402)

CONQUISTADORS. 4 hours on two tapes. 2001. In Conquistadors, Michael Wood travels in the footsteps of some of the greatest of the Spanish adventurers from Amazonia to Lake Titicaca , and from the deserts of North Mexico to the heights of Machu Picchu . He experiences first hand the reality of epic journeys, such as those made by Hernán Cortés and Fransisco and Gonzalo Pizarro and explores the turbulent and terrifying events surrounding the Spanish conquest of the Aztec and Inca empires, as well as Orellana's discovery of the Amazon and Cabeza de Vaca's extraordinary journey across America to the Pacific. In Peru , as in Mexico , the Conquistadors swept away the indigenous states, subjugating the native people, destroying their religion and culture. Michael Wood brings history alive as he relates this story of conquest, heroism and greed and shows us how the Conquistadors have changed the way that we see the world, in terms of history and civilization, justice, and human rights. Closed Captioned. (#343, 344) **Lesson Plans and Interactive Learning Resources to accompany films are available through the Center of Latin American Studies or at www.pbs.org/conquistadors/

The record of their interactions with audiences in four countries dramatizes the dilemma of cross-cultural misunderstanding we continue to live with today. He set out in canoe on the nearby river, but instead of finding Carijó, he found a cross on the river's edge. The cross held a symbolism that Staden recognized: it was the sign used by the Tupiniquins to call their allies, the Portuguese. Staden called the Tupiniquins, expecting to receive news of his slave. Together they travel to a remote site in the highlands where the community of Petanac once stood. At Petanac and other Maya communities across Guatemala , survivors gather to bear witness as forensic experts unearth the mass graves of their loved ones. Once the dirt has been patiently removed by teams of archaeologists, the bones found in clandestine cemeteries tell their own mute story of agony and terror. In a series of moving interviews, Mateo and other survivors of the massacre at Petanac bear witness to the slaughter of family members and friends during one of the bloodiest periods in Central American history. Interspersed throughout the film are many of Hernández-Salazar's photos-compelling meditations on death and the life-affirming forces of hope, desire, longing and resistance that counteract it-which have become a symbol of the quest for truth about the atrocities committed in Guatemala .
