Ed Small received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa and has been a member of the Department of Theatre and Film faculty since 1989. He teaches classes in basic 16mm film production and animation as well as the history and theory of both experimental and documentary film/video.

He is the author of Direct Theory: Experimental Film/Video as Major Genre. His theoretical specializations include cine-semiotics and technological historiography. Dr. Small is currently completing a book entitled Animation: an Historical/Theoretical Approach.
