Jeanne Klein received theatre degrees from Western Michigan University (B.A.), Michigan State University (M.A.), and the University of Kansas (Ph.D.).

Before coming to KU, she taught and directed productions at Ohio Northern University, Gladwin High School, and several summer youth theatre camps in Michigan.

In 1985, she became a nationally recognized Winifred Ward Scholar. She currently teaches courses in children's drama (with local elementary students), theatre for young audiences, children and media, teaching methods in middle/secondary schools, as well as drama workshops in area schools.

She has directed over fifty
productions for and with young people of all ages in a wide range of theatrical styles.

Given her cross-disciplinary research in developmental psychology, she has conducted several studies to explore how children make meanings of plays in performance. These young audience reception studies have received national awards from the American Alliance for Theatre and Education (AATE) as well as recognition at the Netherlands Theatre Institute in Amsterdam.

To broaden her inter-disciplinary approaches to directing, she has attended many international festivals for young audiences across the US, as well as Montréal, Québec and Lyons, France as a member of ASSITEJ/USA.

Her numerous articles and conference papers have been published in the Youth Theatre Journal, TYA Today, Stage of the Art (formerly Drama/Theatre Teacher), Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism, Theatre Research in Canada, Canadian Theatre Review, Design for Arts in Education, and Modern Drama, among others.

She serves on the editorial
boards of the Youth Theatre Journal and Research in Drama Education (Exeter), as well as juries for AATE Research and Dissertation Awards.

In 1990, she led the writing team of the first K-12 Drama/Theatre Curriculum Program Guide for the State of Kansas and continues to advocate theatre education across the state.
