Leslie Bennett is the Movement
Specialist for the Department of Theatre and Film. She has a diverse background
in theatre arts, dance and vocal music and has performed professionally in all
of those venues. Her choreographic credits include Le Nozze di Figaro,
A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Die Fledermaus for the
Boston University Opera Institute, as well as several productions for the Watertown
Children’s Theatre, the Boston Children’s Opera and The Chatham
Chorale. Bennett has performed the roles of Despina in Cosi Fan Tutte
with Opera Aperta, under the direction of Craig Smith, Katchen in Boston Lyric
Opera’s Werther and Lelia in the Early American Theatre Company’s
Satanella. Other operatic credits include Rose in Street Scene,
Pamina and Papagena in The Magic Flute, and Monica in The Medium.
Bennett was a member of the Boston Lyric Opera’s chorus for 5 years. In
the annual Playwright’s Platform in Boston, she premiered the role of
Hester Prynne in A! The Letter and performed with American
Stage Festival, Merrimack Repertory Theatre and the New Ehrlich Theatre.
Bennett received her MFA
from Boston University in Movement and Voice and taught Movement there in the
Opera and Music departments. She also taught Movement at Emerson College and
was on the Applied Voice Faculty there as well. Since coming to KU, Bennett
has served as choreographer for Really Rosie, The Magic Flute,
George Dandin, and You Never Can Tell; as Fight Director for
The Royal Family and As You Like It ; and as Movement Coach
on several productions. She made her directing debut in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s
A Grand Night for Singing.
