Greg Stopka

Greg is a Thomas and Barbara Kester Page Scholar and graduated from Augustana College in May 2007. While at Augustana, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and Political Science with a minor in History. While serving as Student Government President for two years, he developed a financial plan and managed a budget of $192,000. He also represented the students to the Board of Trustees and the College President, where he worked toward authorization of a new student center and an honor code. Greg also led a Recycling Task Force, which created an all campus-recycling program and received a national recycling award in its first year.

Originally from Arlington Heights, Illinois, Greg’s interest in public service has grown through his encounters with developing democracies in Eastern Europe and his involvement in church service trips. Greg traveled to Biloxi, Mississippi, to help with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts and observed the impact of public service in rebuilding Mississippi.

Greg worked in Senator Barack Obama’s office in Moline, Illinois, where his responsibilities included facilitating communications with regional officials and non-profits and managing the daily operations of the Senator’s office. Through this experience, he saw the importance of governance in community development.

Currently, Greg is working in the Budget Manager’s Office in the City of Olathe, Kansas, where his projects include studying a potential transition to program budgeting, developing a fee resolution, and preparing the budget document to receive the GFOA Award.
