Ryan, a recipient of the Buford M. Watson and Virgil Basgall scholarships, graduated cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Community and Regional Planning from Missouri State University. As an undergraduate, Ryan served as a resident assistant, student senator, and a volunteer for Springfield, Missouri’s local Humane Society and area Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program.
After graduation, Ryan worked for one year as a full-time intern for the City Administrator and City Planner of Ozark, Missouri (pop. 17,000). During his time with Ozark, Ryan created the city’s first pedestrian master plan, developed the city’s new website, completed the city’s first employee manual, developed both economic development and residential brochures and was involved in a host of other projects dealing with budgeting, the EPA, grants, graphic design and GIS.
During graduate school at the University of Kansas, Ryan worked a short four-month stint for the City of Liberty, Missouri (pop.30,000) as the intern for the communications director and assistant city manager, before he accepted a position in Topeka, Kansas. Ryan is now the intern for the Deputy City Manager of Topeka, Kansas (pop.120,000). His main job responsibility is to help manage and develop Topeka’s newest TIF.
