Jon, originally from Olathe, KS, is a recipient of the Mary Morrill-Litchfield Scholarship. He graduated summa cum laude from Morningside College with a degree in Political Science and Business Administration. At graduation, Jon received the Dean’s Award in the Humanities and the Dr. Tom Curry Outstanding Business Student Award. The Alumni Association also recognized him as one of five Outstanding Graduates. He served as President of Morningside Civic Union (MCU), an organization that promotes civic engagement on campus and in the community, as Vice President of Student Government and as President of the Activity Council.
Much of Jon’s interest in government and politics developed during an internship with Iowa District Judge Jeffrey Neary, during which he researched Judge Neary’s successful retention campaign. His research was presented by Judge Neary at the 2005 Iowa Judges Conference.
While working with Judge Neary, Jon decided to attend law school and entered Washburn University’s School of Law. Although Jon’s first year was a successful one, he decided not to pursue law as a vocation and instead begin a career in public service. Although his interests still revolve around policy, politics and law, he believes that through strong governance and administration, and not litigation, society and communities can be improved.
Jon is currently working with the League of Kansas Municipalities as a research assistant, focusing on energy policy at the federal, state and local level. Jon is a member of the International City/County Management Association and is the Department’s representative to the Graduate Student Organization.
