  • Nickie Lee, a Kansas University graduate student in the master’s of public administration program, picked Basehor for her nearly year-long internship and was featured in an article in the Basehor Sentinel newspaper.

  • Holly Goerdel, Kelly Leroux, Jared Llorens, and Justin Marlowe, assistant professors of public administration, have been invited to the historic Minnowbrook conference addressing how public administration, public management and public service can better respond to the turbulence and critical problems of society. They are among only 40 emerging scholars across the United States invited to participate.

  • Graduates of Public Administration degree programs were honored at a graduation banquet on Friday evening, April 25, in the Ballroom at the Kansas Memorial Union in Lawrence. Family and friends of the graduates, as well as the department's faculty and staff, attended to recognize the accomplishments of students who completed their degree requirements in the 2007-2008 academic year.   • Congratulations to this year's Venture Challenge winners Venture Challenge is a semester-long competition in which KU student teams and community partners work together to address a social challenge.  Student teams, either as part of a class or independently, compete as social entrepreneurs to propose a solution to their community partner’s challenge.  A total of 13 teams competed this year and all of the winning teams consisted of Public Administration students!  The winning teams for the Arts sector included 1) Charlie Bryan, Meghan Hemenway, Nolan Klouda and Gregory Stopka; and 2) Nickie Lee, Mike Appleby, Matt McGinley, Dustin Schwartz and Nick Shigouri.  The winning team for the Poverty Reduction sector included Frank Gong, Amanda Ostreko and Philip Rodriguez.  For the Environmental Sustainability sector, winners included Jenny Hesseltine, Jared Cobb, Jon Fisk & Josh Shaw. 

  • Distinguished Professor George Frederickson has been selected to receive the Steeples Service to Kansans Award. The Steeples Award recognizes faculty in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who provide significant service to the people of Kansas as a purposeful extension to their teaching and research. Dr. Frederickson will be presented this award at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Master's Hooding Ceremony on Saturday, May 17th at 10:00 a.m. in the Crafton-Preyer Theatre of Murphy Hall.
  • Dan Lady, Senior Public Administration major and Dr. Holly T. Goerdel, Faculty Advisor, won an award for their project entitled, "Managing Homeland Defense in American States: A Multi-method Study of Intelligence Fusion Centers." Their poster presentation focused on three important aspects of this research: identifying and collecting data on a sample of state-level intelligence organizations, development of an original management survey based on semi-structured interviews of top state officials, and private-sector involvement in subnational security governance. They presented their project at the Kansas Union during the 11th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, which was held April 12th.
  • Professor John Nalbandian and his wife, Carol are the winners of the Buford M. Watson, Jr. Public Service Award. This award is presented by the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and was established in 1990. The award recognizes individuals whose work in the public sector serves as a role model for others. John and Carol will be presented with this award April 25th at the Chamber.
  • Professor Sanjay Pandey has been awarded tenure to Associate Professor by the Kansas Board of Regents. Professor Pandey has been a professor at the University of Kansas since 2006.
  • US News and World Report has released its 2008 rankings of graduate programs and the University of Kansas was once again selected as the #1 MPA program for city management and urban policy. KU’s MPA program was ranked seventh overall for graduate programs in public affairs in the U.S. Rankings are based on fall 2007 surveys of deans, directors, and department chairs representing 269 master's of public affairs and administration programs. The rankings support what KU MPA alumni across the country already know—this is a great program!
  • The Contra Costa Times reports that at least six cities in the Bay Area in California are operating without city managers as they scramble to replace retiring baby boomers. Retirements are creating challenges for cities nationwide and point to many future opportunities in local government for public service-minded students.
  • Register now for the 60th Annual City and County Management Conference! This year's event will take place on Thursday-Friday, April 24-25 in Lawrence with sessions around the theme is "Sustainability and the Changing Face of Kansas." More details and the registration form are available here.

  • Doctoral student Robert Nye has been named the 2007 winner of the Mike Curro Best Student Paper Award from the Association for Budgeting and Financial Management (ABFM). Read more. Robert’s paper was completed under the supervision of Assistant Professor Justin Marlowe, the 2003 winner of the Curro Best Student Paper Award.
  • Assistant Professor Sanjay Pandey, together with co-author Don Moynihan, has won the Dimock Award for the lead essay in the journal Public Administration Review in the January/February 2007 issue. The Award award was given at The American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) meeting in Dallas in March, 2008. To view picture, please click here.
  • Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius (KU MPA, ’77) has appointed Charles Jones, Director of KU’s Public Management Center in Topeka, to the Public Finance Transparency Board, a 15-member group which is charged with making state financial information more readily available to the public.
  • Marilu Goodyear, Associate Professor and Department Chair, has been elected to the Executive Council of NASPAA, the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration.
