Laureen Pfannenstiel and Roger Moore, KU MPA graduates, will be presenting the process by which the Topeka/Shawnee County Heartland Visioning draft strategic plan was developed. Laureen’s involvement includes working as a support staff member with Heartland Visioning via the Topeka Chamber of Commerce (although affiliated with the Chamber, Heartland Visioning is a grassroots organization and not officially part of the Chamber). Roger became a vision task force member and attended four community task force meetings which facilitated creation of the draft Heartland Visioning strategic plan. . Heartland Visioning began as a way for the citizens of Topeka and Shawnee County to work together to craft a plan for the future and make Topeka a better place to live and work. You will also be able to give your input on the plan. The Symposium will gather a distinguished group of scholar from around the country in law, philosophy, economics, sociology, and political science to discuss racial disparities in wealth, health, education, and the criminal justice system and to access whether legal reparations for slavery can be a viable means of dealing with these persistent disparities. Credit will be awarded on half day attendance.

The Emergency Management Institute (EMI) (FEMA) offers more than fifty independent study courses. These are self-paced courses designed for people who have emergency management responsibilities and the general public. For most of the courses you will need to download and print the materials. Others are interactive courses that you can take directly over the internet. All are offered free-of-charge to those who qualify for enrollment. Each Independent Study Course includes lessons with practice exercises and a final examination. Students who score 75 percent or better are issued a certificate of achievement from EMI. For each certificate you earn, you will receive 3 credits with a maximum of 6 credits or two courses.

The Computer Center at KU provides an extensive range of short workshops on most topics/software. Workshops are offered for beginners to advanced.
