United Way campaign launch planned
The 2011 KU United Way campaign will get underway with a kick-off event on the Kansas Union plaza from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22. United Way representatives will be on hand to provide information about United Way, this year’s fundraising goals and have fun with the KU community.
Free hot dogs and popcorn will be provided to the first 400 guests. KU Athletics will provide a football target. Participants who can toss a football through a hole in the target will receive Live United/Rock Chalk T-shirts. The shirts, which raise money for the campaign, will also be for sale. A T-shirt challenge between KU and Missouri will be part of the campaign again this year. Last year, Mizzou won the competition handily, so Jayhawks are encouraged to turn that trend around this year, Colleen Gregoire, vice president and campaign coordinator of the Douglas County United Way, said.
The goal is to raise more than $6,000 in T-shirt sales this year. The overall goal for KU’s campaign is to raise more than $300,000. Val Stella, Distinguished Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, is the chair of KU’s 2011 United Way campaign.
Information on how to participate in this year’s fund drive will be mailed to all employees soon. United Way raises money for a variety of charitable organizations at KU, in Lawrence and throughout Douglas County.
