Cahokia

Earth Day Field Trip to Cahokia: On Earth Day, 22 April 2006 28 KU students and faculty took a field trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Cahokia Mounds Site in Collinsville, Illinois. The field trip was led by Dr. William Woods, EVRN Director, who has extensive archaeological experience investigating the site for over two decades. Cahokia Mounds is an archaeological site occupying some 5 square miles on the Mississippi River flood plain across the Mississippi River from St. Louis. Cahokia, which flourished for approximately four centuries (ca. AD 950-1350) and had a peak population of some 15,000 individuals, was the most extensive urban center in prehistoric America north of Mexico and the primary center of the Middle Mississippian culture. Although initially quite successful, the articulation of this society with its environment ultimately proved to be unsustainable.
