The Environmental Studies Program is here to assist you in beginning an environmental career beyond your undergraduate academic years. It is never too early to start planning ahead and thinking about the future. Thousands of jobs exist in a variety of environmental fields throughout the United States; job possibilities range from soil and water conservation and environmental consulting to waste water management, wildlife ecology, and remote sensing. Environmental Studies alumni are employed in environmental consulting and engineering firms working on environmental impact assessments or as technicians, safety officers, or field personnel. Others are employed in state, local and regional governmental agencies as resource specialists or in planning.

Job Openings with Repower America, KCMO Area: Communications Director and Field Organizer
Job Posting: Repower America Communications Director
The Alliance for Climate Protection is seeking an experienced
Communications Director for its Repower America campaign in
Washington, D.C. The Communications Director is responsible for
developing and implementing a communications strategy to spearhead the
communications activities of Repower, with a focus on (1) educating
the public about the causes of and solutions to the climate crisis;
and (2) promoting the passage of federal climate protection
legislation during the current Congress. The Communications Director
would also maintain and further develop Repower America’s
relationships with national reporters, increase placement in national,
local and non-traditional media, and work with Repower America
strategy and campaign staff to forward communications objectives
related to the campaign.
Job Description:
- Designs and manages national and local strategic communications and message plan for Repower America campaign (earned and paid media).
- Develops and markets messages for Repower America’s public education and legislative efforts.
- Serves as an on the record spokesperson and media resource for Repower America’s pertinent national and political media outlets.
- Oversees quality control and message discipline in Repower America materials (press releases, letters to the editor, op-eds, new media, media material, phone solicitations, etc.).
- Collaborates with New Media Director on new media tools for message delivery.
- Helps identify appropriate Repower America spokespersons in response to media requests, as needed.
- Positions Repower America's brand politically and within the climate and environmental community.
- Manages Repower America communications activities including staff, press, and consultants.
- Ensures that media is monitored to keep Repower staff informed and directs response operation.
- Prepares regular reports on Repower news coverage and other metrics communications work, assists with board reports and materials and works with development on any related communications efforts.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Goal-driven and results-oriented individual with a strong commitment to climate, environmental and/or public interest.
- 3-8 years of relevant professional campaign or journalism experience, post-college, including (but not limited to) work in political, policy, legal, journalistic, or government settings.
- Well-organized, a self-starter, flexible, creative, able to work under pressure, and be able to work quickly and cooperatively on several efforts at one time.
- Excellent writing and verbal skills essential.
Field Organizer
SCOPE OF WORK: Work primarily involves grassroots and grass tops organizing on behalf of the Alliance for Climate Protection to advance the Alliance’s goal of educating the public about the causes of and solutions to climate change. Work will also involve a portion of time spent on activities for the Alliance’s sister non-profit corporation, the Climate Protection Action Fund, to advance its goal of promoting passage of strong federal climate change legislation during the current Congress.
Field organizers are being hired for a variety of locations across the country. Employment is “at-will” and indefinite with no minimum term. The salary for these positions varies based on experience and includes a generous benefit package. This position reports directly to the assigned state director.
DUTIES PERFORMED:
- Identify, recruit, train and supervise volunteers,
- Complete direct voter contact duties, to include phone banking and door to door canvassing,
- Complete general community outreach at events and other public venues to include signing up supporters and distributing educational materials detailing the causes of and solutions to climate change,
- Assist in planning logistics for press and community events to promote legislation or educate the public about the causes of and solutions to climate change.
- Assist in promoting organizational events and other crowd-building activities as assigned.
- Represent the Alliance at events and meetings as necessary,
- Participate in coalition outreach to build relationships with community leaders, political groups and other non-profit advocacy organizations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Job requires a bachelor’s degree and experience in political organizing during at least one election cycle. Requires extensive written and verbal communications skills needed to motivate and communicate clear messages to members and the general public on the urgency and solvability of the climate crisis.
