Police Officer
The entry level position is University Police Officer
Minimum requirements
- High school diploma or completion of a G.E.D. equivalency
- Age 21 by the time of appointment
- United States citizenship
- Must be able to pass a background check and be free of any diversions for or convictions of felonies or misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence
- Must be able to meet the admission requirements for the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center
- Must be able to obtain an unrestricted Kansas driver's license (corrected vision acceptable)
- Must be able to perform all the essential job functions and not pose a direct threat to the health and safety of self or others
Hiring Process

- Applications are reviewed by the Public Safety Office
- Successful completion of POST. Applicants will be contacted by Public Safety Office to schedule the Police Officer Selection Test, a skills-based test covering arithmetic, reading, grammar and simple report writing
- Interview with Police Interview Board. Applicants will be contacted by the Public Safety Office to schedule interviews
- Background check interview with a detective will be conducted the same day as the interview with the Board. A thorough background check must be conducted and passed before applicant can proceed in the hiring process
- Successful completion of Behavioral Assessment Interview and Written Exam. Applicants will be contacted by the Public Safety Office to schedule this assessment
- Interview with Chief and Assistant Chief of Public Safety Office. Applicants will be contacted by the Public Safety Office to schedule interviews
- As a condition of employment, applicants must pass a physical exam and drug test
Security Officer
The entry level position is Safety & Security Officer
Minimum requirements
- High school diploma or completion of a G.E.D. equivalency
- 18 years of age or older
- United States citizenship
- Must be able to pass a background check and be free of any diversions or convictions of felonies or misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence
- Must be able to obtain an unrestricted Kansas driver’s license (corrected vision acceptable)

Communications Specialist
The entry level position is Communications Specialist I
Minimum requirements
- High school diploma or completion of a G.E.D. equivalency
- United States citizenship
- Must be able to pass a background check and be free of any diversions or convictions of felonies or misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence
- Must submit to a background check
- Must be able to work assigned 8-, 10- or 12-hour shifts with rotating days off
- Hearing correctable to a range that will allow normal radio and telephone conversation with field units. Must submit to a hearing examination
- Vision correctable to a range that will allow reading of computer display terminals, maps, and printouts quickly and accurately
- Ability to perform all essential job functions and shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of self or others
