BFSC Unit Award

The BFSC Unit award is presented to an academic or administrative unit that exhibits a commitment to diversity in the workplace through any or all of the following activities

  • Aggressive recruitment of African American Faculty or Staff;
  • Establishment of a work environment conducive to the retention of African American Faculty or Staff; or
  • Development and successful implementation of a diversity plan.

The BFSC Unit Award was established in 2000 to recognize extended, sustained, and exemplary service of a University academic or administrative unit.

Nomination Materials
Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to submit a nomination for an academic or administrative unit they believe meets the standards set forth above.

In order to be considered for the award, a complete nomination must be submitted.  A complete nomination includes:

  • The BFSC Unit Award Nomination Form
  • A one page cover letter which sets forth why the academic or administrative unit deserves and should be awarded the BFSC Unit Award.  The letter should provide specific details on how the unit has exhibited a commitment to diversity in the work place.
  • A letter of support which corroborates the nomination.

Eligibility
Any University unit, academic or administrative unit is eligible.  Nominations must be postmarked by March 1 of each nomination year.  If March 1 falls on a weekend, the nomination will be due on the following Monday.

Selection
Awards will be based on the quality of the nomination, which includes documentation which details the unit’s actions of service to the African American faculty and staff of the University community.  Decisions will be made by the majority vote of the BFSC Executive Committee.

Nomination Process
All materials must be post-marked by March 1.  All nominees will be notified of their nomination and the successful nominee will be notified by the end of March.  The award will be presented at the Black Faculty and Staff Awards Banquet, which is held in April.
