Eligibility Requirements for BFSC Achievement Awards

  1. The awards are open to Black/African/African American undergraduate (sophomores, juniors, seniors only), graduate and professional students at the University of Kansas.
  2. The student must be enrolled at KU full time (12 hours for undergraduates/6 hours for graduate and professional students) for both the fall and spring semesters of the academic year during which the recipient is selected.
  3. The student must have a minimum current overall GPA of 3.00 for undergraduates, 3.50 for graduate and professional students, and 2.50 for law students on a 4.00 scale.
  4. The student must show evidence of leadership potential and interest and involvement in the Black community.
  5. The completed application and supporting materials must be submitted by 5 p.m. on March 1st of the year of the award. If the 1st falls on a weekend, it will be due on the next business day.
  6. Prior BFSC award recipients may not apply.

Please write an essay (350 words maximum) in response to the following statement: There are many concerns facing the African/African American community. List one you feel is significant and tell us how you have helped or plan to help find solutions to this concern.*

Submit two letters of recommendation: one must be from a faculty member and/or an academic advisor. Please have your references email their letters of recommendation to Pamela Scott (pscott@ku.edu). The letter should be sent in an attachment from their personal or work email and NOT from your email address.

Submit a current ARTS form, including the fall semester of the current academic year. Please turn in your ARTS form to Pamela Scott, Office of Admissions, KU Visitor Center, 1502 Iowa St., Lawrence, KS 66045.
