Hobart C. Jackson Service Award
The Hobart C. Jackson Service Award is presented to a faculty or staff member who has provided outstanding service to African American KU Students. The Hobart C. Jackson Service Award was established in 2000 to recognize extended, sustained, and exemplary service to the African American students of the University community. The award was named for Hobart C. Jackson, Jr. an Architecture faculty member and the inaugural president of the Black Faculty and Staff Council. The award may be given posthumously.
Nomination Materials
Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to submit a nomination for a member of the faculty or staff they believe meets the qualifications. The nominee must:
- Actively participate in the African American university community; and
- Be aware and supportive of the initiatives of the Black Faculty and Staff Council.
In order to be considered for the award, a complete nomination must be submitted. A complete nomination form includes:
- The Hobart C. Jackson Service Award Nomination form,
- A one page cover letter which sets forth why the individual should be considered for the Hobart C. Jackson Service Award. Please specify:
- How the individual has helped African American students;
- The number of years of service at the University; and
- The nominee’s role at the University.
- A letter of recommendation written by a colleague.
Eligibility
All faculty and staff who are employed by the University of Kansas are eligible. Nominations must be postmarked by March 1 of each nomination year. If March 1 falls on a weekend, the nomination will be due on the following Monday.
Selection
Awards will be based on the quality of the nomination which includes details regarding the nominee’s service to the African American students of the University community. Decisions will be made by majority vote of the BFSC Executive Board.
Nomination Process
All materials must be postmarked by March 1. All nominees will be notified of their nomination and the successful nominee will be notified by the end of March. The award will be presented at the Black Faculty and Staff Awards Banquet, which is held in April.
