Financial Support

  • University fellowships: the department annually nominates incoming and continuing graduate students for a variety of university fellowships.
  • Morris Family Scholarship: one scholarship is awarded each year to an incoming doctoral student. Holders of the Morris Family Scholarship receive $15,000 and a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) postion in their first year. Upon successful completion of this year, Morris scholars will be given priority for either a GTA position or an internship in the Spencer Museum in the following two years.
  • Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) positions Generally, these positions are held by students who have completed at least a year of the M.A. program.
  • Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) positions are offered primarily in the History of Art digital resource library.
  • Curatorial intern positions are offered by the Spencer Museum of Art.
  • Travel grants for doctoral research (up to $1800) are available from the Art History Travel Fund.
  • Small grants to support travel to present papers at conferences are available from the department and the university.
