Fellowships

Information about fellowship opportunities, at both the pre-doctoral and post-doctoral levels, is routinely posted on the fellowship bulletin board, across from SMA 208. Graduate students no longer living in the Lawrence area may request information from or photocopies of these fliers from Maud Humphrey.

Further information about fellowships is available through the KU Hall Center website, at http://www.hallcenter.ku.edu/~hallcenter/grants/development/.

Some fellowship programs invite candidates to apply directly without nomination by the department. Others, however, such as those of the National Gallery of Art's Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA), and those of the Kress Foundation, require departmental nomination. In most cases, the department may nominate no more than one individual for a particular fellowship or fellowship category.

Students wishing to be considered for a fellowship requiring departmental nomination should submit to their faculty advisor and Maud Humphrey a current CV and a short (500-word maximum) letter of application, outlining their status in the program, their research and writing progress, and their reasons for wishing to be nominated for the particular fellowship (including their intended use of the support).

These materials should be submitted no later than six weeks prior to the application deadline of the particular fellowship competition. This six-week period will permit adequate time for the art history faculty to consider and select departmental nominees, and for those nominees and their faculty sponsors to prepare and submit the necessary application materials to the granting institution(s).

FYI, the application deadline for the CASVA Fellowships is November 15, and that for the Kress Two-Year Fellowships in the History of Art and the Kress Travel Fellowships is November 30. Therefore, letters to the faculty requesting departmental nomination for these fellowships are due October 4 and October 18, respectively.

Please let me know if you have questions or require further information.
