NATIONAL COMMUNITY EDUCATION DAY IN WICHITA

On November 15th at Wichita City Hall, 455 N Main, at 9:00 am, Mayor Mayans will proclaim this date as National Community Education Day in Wichita.  Please attend if you are available: show your support for community education! There will be a reception honoring school principals who have embraced after-school programs at 2:00 pm the same day at the Atwater NCH Learning Center, 2755 E 19th St, also in Wichita.

National Community Education Day highlights the importance of community renewal and practical strategies for achieving the goal of whole communities collaborating for the greater good. Originally celebrated in 1982 to recognize and support strong relationships between communities and schools, National Community Education Day serves as an opportunity for community educators to showcase their programs and initiatives. It emphasizes the need for community involvement in our nation’s schools by members of every age group and allows Community Education programs to raise the awareness of the benefits of Community Education and community schools to their districts, constituents, and policymakers.

Community Education multiplies the richness of after-school programs and opens the doors of school buildings to everyone as it serves all ages in the community. Our children need a safe and nurturing place to go after school. Our community members need opportunities to learn, grow, and enrich their lives. Adult education, GED, ESL, Early Childhood Education, as well as after-school programs are all-important components of Community Education offerings and are celebrated as integral parts of community education programming.
