The Mission of the Kansas Enrichment Network: To raise awareness, build capacity and sustainability, and promote the importance of safe, high-quality, affordable out-of-school programs.
challenger learning center of kansas Student Programs

The Challenger Learning Center of Kansas would like to invite teachers and educators to bring science into their classrooms through activities at the Center.

A three-hour mission simulation at the Challenger Space Center is an innovative and exciting co-curricular experience. Each mission is designed to hold a class of 16 to 32 students.

Each mission costs $500.00. That includes the teacher training, mission preperation materials and the mission experience in our state-of-the-art mission simulator.

*****Mission registrations for the 2006-07 school year are now being accepted. Any 2006-07 mission registration form received at CLCKS by July 31 will be $450.00. That is a $50.00 savings! Just send in your mission registration form, you will be sent an invoice in August!*****

Prior to flying a mission, the educator for each class will attend a teacher orientation program at least four to six weeks before the date of their mission. At this workshop, educators will receive materials specifically designed to prepare the students for their mission. The Curriculum materials teachers receive are alligned with state and national standards and are 'plug and teach' making it easy to integrate into their studies in the weeks prior to their mission date.

Pre-Mission Educator Training Call or e-mail Kay Tibbs 620-326-3727/tibbs@clcks.org to schedule your Educator training. There is no cost for the Educator Training if you have scheduled your Mission.

8-15-06 9:00am to 4:00pm
8-16-06 9:00am to 4:00pm
8-17-06 9:00am to 4:00pm
9-15-06 8:00am to 3:00pm
10-20-06 8:00am to 3:00pm
11-10-06 8:00am to 3:00pm

***REMEMBER to allow at least 4 weeks between teacher training and the mission***

The pre-flight activities provided during orientation encompass a variety of interdisciplinary themes, from math and science, to the arts.

The Mission: When students arrive, a short briefing is held in which the students are given their assignments and an overview of the mission objectives. The group is then divided into Mission Control and Space Craft crews. Each member is assigned to one of the eight teams that comprise the crew. The simulated space flight takes roughly three ho urs from start to finish, with students experiencing both Mission Control and Space Craft.

Challenger Center creates a space-based learning environment in which students have a hands-on opportunity to utilize their critical thinking powers and decision-making skills helping them to become scientifically literate citizens of the 21st century.
