National Zoo
This month we've got a zoology resource for you. The National Zoo in Washington, DC (a part of the Smithsonian Institution) has an excellent website cataloguing their animals in vivid color. If your students enjoy learning about animals, this website will almost certainly get their attention.

Kansas Reads to Preschoolers November 14-20
This One Book, One State project is out-of-the-gate and running with Governor Kathleen Sebelius as Honorary Chair! The Kansas Reads project highlights the importance of reading to preschoolers. We define preschoolers as children birth to age five. The goal is that all preschoolers will be read to the week of November 14-20, 2005, which coincidently is National Children’s Book Week! To read to all preschoolers, all 226,453—-we will need your help!

Interactive Program Map
K.E.N. is pleased to announce a new website development. We have created an interactive map which we hope to use to catalogue all out-of-school time programs in Kansas. You can see the map here: http://www.ku.edu/~ken/State/programs/ksprograms.html.
We also encourage you to submit your program to be included on the map. To make this easier, we have constructed a handy online form for your use, available here: http://www.ku.edu/~ken/State/programs/programform.html

H.R. 856
By an overwhelming vote of 353 to 62, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Federal Youth Coordination Act (H.R. 856). This vote was strongly bipartisan, with a significant majority of both Republicans (163-62) and Democrats (189-0) voting for the legislation. Thank your representatives yourself by taking action on the Youth Policy Action Center: http://capwiz.com/mobilize/go/FYCA_Thanks

The Federal Youth Coordination Bill will create a Federal Youth Development Council bringing senior officials from all departments together with state and local officials, foundations, researchers, faith- and community-based organizations, and, most importantly, young people themselves to bring new focus and attention to developing an overarching, coherent and effective approach to youth policy.
