NATURE OF WORK:
Assists in the creation of VFW magazine, Checkpoint and all other publications department materials. Communicates information requested by readers/members. Researches and writes articles.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Magazine and Special Projects

• Writes articles.
• Copy edits and proofreads articles.
• Selects stories for and writes monthly VFW In Action column.
• Manages reunion database, including data entry, troubleshooting problem reunions and serving as liaison with reunion coordinators.
• Types all “Claims.”
• Maintains database of author queries.
• Prepares correspondence in response to manuscript queries and e-mail and telephone inquiries.
• Maintains in-office and storage room magazine archive.
• Selects cartoons and jokes for Jest-a-Minute in magazine.
• Conducts research.
• Distributes VFW magazine internally.
• Creates annual magazine index.
• Shares management of social media pages.
• Maintains digital edition e-mailing list as well as updates digital edition and audio on website.

Checkpoint

• Writes articles.
• Helps copy edit.

Office Duties

• Answers main phone line to department.
• Inventories and orders office supplies.
• Sorts and distributes mail.
• Keeps records of attendance.
• Files correspondence.
• Orders and distributes bound magazine volumes (annually).
• Updates Department roster using CGI database.
• Accommodates unexpected tasks, one-time projects and temporary assignments.
  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism.
• Experience on college newspaper and/or internship with publication.
• Mastery of principles and all facets of discipline—proven and demonstrated writing, editing, reporting and researching skills.
• Precise knowledge of the written word: grammar, punctuation and AP Style.
• Ability to use various computer software programs, including File Maker Pro, Microsoft Word and Excel—as well as PowerPoint.
• Manual dexterity, attention to detail and ability to work independently.
• Capacity to meet multiple, simultaneous short-term deadlines under pressure.
• Possesses appropriate personality traits—initiative, outgoing, sociable, enthusiastic and energetic—for working with co-workers, members and general public.
• Understanding of social media world.

SCOPE OF POSITION:

• Reports to editor-in-chief.
• Typical contacts are with entire magazine staff, as well as readers/members.
• Works independently without daily supervision by prioritizing own work.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Normal office environment.
• Requires typing, sitting, standing, walking, speaking, hearing and lifting.
• Requires problem-solving, reasoning, reading and writing.
• Requires travel to assignments to cover VFW events and research stories.
