Great Plains Media:
Programming Intern
Great Plains media is looking for programming interns to work with 1320 KLWN and 105.9 KISS FM! Great Plains media is a locally run group of radio stations with an emphasis on local programming unique in today’s media world. Interns (regardless of station), will get a chance to network themselves as well as learn valuable on-air and production skills.
1320 KLWN Sports:
KLWN is looking for interns to help with its new show “Sports for Lunch” with Craig Hoffman. SFL will be live on location at a local restaurant Monday-Friday from Noon-1pm. Interns will help with show prep, finding and cutting sound and occasionally booking interviews. Interns will split time during the show between in studio and on-site with Craig. Interns will gain valuable experience in the sports talk field, learning how to prepare for, organize and execute a show. They will also be able to tap into Craig’s expansive network of contacts. Interns will also be able to get their tapes (TV and radio) looked at and reviewed weekly.
105.9 KISS FM:
If you want to get into music radio, there is no better format to learn in than Top 40/CHR. It’s the fastest moving and widely considered the most difficult to master as it is ever evolving. Luckily for you, there’s one of these stations in your backyard. Nothin’ But The Hits, 105.9 KISS FM flipped from longtime Lawrence staple The Lazer in January and has quickly become a favorite from Topeka to Kansas City.
Top 40 jocks (and any other format of music DJ) must be multi-faceted. Want proof? The guy you’ll be working with as a KISS intern is the same sports guy you read about above from KLWN. “KJ” as he’s known to KISS listeners has interned with some of the top up and coming minds in CHR and is in constant communication with top guns such as Ryan Sampson at Sirius/XM (programmer of Hits 1 and host of The Morning Mashup). If you want to learn how to become an entertaining on-air presence along with the best ways to utilize social media and create a killer blog, stop looking for other internships. You’ve found what you’re looking for!
Interns will get a chance to work with (key words work with as in do real work as in not doing lame work that accomplishes nothing) KJ as he preps for his show and then serve as an on-air sidekick during the 3-7pm afternoon drive show. KISS FM is a 100,000 watt station that reaches from nearly Manhattan to Independence, MO. This is your chance to build your brand and make that tape you’ll need to get hired. If you excel, you might even find your way onto a few weekend or overnight shifts.
Anybody interested in either internship should contact Craig directly at choffman@gpmnow.com with a resume and contact info. Internships will start as soon as possible so don’t waste any time getting in touch!

Our Internship Program supports Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's mission by providing independent journalism experience to young people from our broadcast regions, who will return to their countries to practice good journalism. This program assists Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's outreach efforts as well as provides interns with an opportunity to develop their skills through practical experience, thus increasing their prospects for employment.
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty offers a limited number of places for interns, which are filled subject to the current needs of our Divisions/Departments at our corporate headquarters in Washington, DC and our broadcasting headquarters in Prague. The internship usually lasts between one and three months. Maximum length of internships in the Prague office is 90 days; Washington may offer a longer internship period.
Interns can support the work of the following Divisions/Departments within Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty: Finance Division, Broadcasting Division (Central Newsroom, Language Services, etc.), Operations Division (Human Resources, Technology, etc.), Communications Dept., and the Office of the President.
University students or recent graduates are eligible. Applicants should always have a working knowledge of English, both oral and written. Working experience in the field of expertise is not necessarily required; however, demonstrated experience or interest in the area in which the intern is seeking placement considered a plus. Knowledge of one of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's broadcasting languages is a major advantage.
Interns who are not receiving an internship stipend from their universities can apply to receive a modest internship stipend; however, all costs incurred with the intern's stay in one of the above-mentioned locations including travel/flights, housing accommodations, health insurance, etc.) will be borne directly by the intern and/or other external sources. Interns are responsible for all arrangements connected with obtaining proper documentation authorizing their stay in the US or in the CR (e.g. Visa). Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty will provide invitation letters, if required. An internship does not in any way constitute a commitment to future employment with RFE/RL.
For employment consideration, applicants should: Send either the 1) completed Internship Application or 2) a Structured Curriculum Vitae (see outline) and a short essay, explaining how their interest or future employment pursuits align with the mission of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, as well as his/her motivation for completing an internship at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Send applications to:
Washington DC Internships: DCInternships@rferl.org
Prague Internships: PRGInternships@rferl.org
We recommend that applications be sent well in advance before the desired period of internship.
