Food Mafia:
Writer/Intern:
Join a start-up technology and social media company in the restaurant industry to help make a positive difference in the food community!  This internship will give you the opportunity to work as a key contributor in designing and developing our Feed editorial section, our newsletter content, news releases, as well as working with chefs and restaurants to create new Food Mafia Exclusive Experience’s.  This is a great opportunity to take initiative, provide input, and make a positive impact on small business owners and food lovers across the world!  Also a great resume builder to show what you can do while you do what you love!

About Food Mafia:

Food Mafia is a restaurant review website that supports the local restaurant community. We focus on the finding the best local, unique to the city restaurants. Members are either invited directly or must request an invitation and be approved. Our members are made up of food lovers, celebrity chefs, and industry professionals who share their favorite and recommended restaurants along with tips on what to order.

We offer a one-of-a-kind restaurant recommendation system and social media network. Members rate their restaurants by Favorite, Recommend, or Been There. Since restaurant reviews are so subjective, we help people identify others with similar taste to find where to go. Since our members have no interest in negative reviews, we simply don’t allow them, the worst thing our members have to say is they’ve “Been There”. When our Godfathers and Members rate a restaurant, that restaurant earns points based on that recommendation. Our Mafia Meter will then sort so you can see what is most popular on the site. You can also refine your search to sort by local members only, chefs, or the people you are following or who are following you.
Food Mafia launched in Chicago on March 25, 2011.  Because of the rapidly growing interest in the site, we have expanded to Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York and we recently opened up the ability for our members to add their favorite restaurants anywhere in the world.  We have more than 1,200 approved members (including celebrity chefs), over 6,000 Facebook fans, 2,000 Twitter followers, and more than 3,000 newsletter subscribers.  Food Mafia has chosen to grow more organically and focus on quality over quantity.  We have been written up in Eater Chicago, Eater National, Thrillist Chicago, and Grubstreet LA.

What makes Food Mafia unique:
Unlike other restaurant review sites, our approved members are made up of food lovers, celebrity chefs, and industry professionals. See what top chefs and restaurateurs are saying about Food Mafia: http://www.foodmafia.com/feed/video-promo-2

Our members love food and are always looking for great new places to try! We offer a platform where chefs can connect directly with loyal customers and attract new loyal customers.  Staying in front of people is critical for a restaurants success and we give chefs and restaurant owners the ability to actively engage with their target audience.

Roles and Responsibilities:
• Create editorial pieces and initiate and secure interviews with food bloggers, chefs, restaurant owners, writers, and industry experts

The Pitch:
Intern
The Pitch, Kansas City's alternative weekly newspaper, is looking for college interns to contribute to its website, pitch.com, and its growing stable of blogs: Plog (news), Fat City (restaurants and food), and Wayward (music and nightlife).

Required attributes: Experience reporting and writing; an interest in blogging; reliable transportation; ability to receive school credit; and a well-developed sense of humor and adventure.

Preferred attributes: Experience using blogging software, like WordPress or Movable Type; experience taking web-quality photographs; and a familiarity with social media (i.e. doesn't think Twitter is a character on iCarly).

These positions are unpaid, so candidates must be able to receive school credit. While some small amount of work can be done remotely, interns will be expected to work from our Kansas City offices. Days and times are flexible.

Interested candidates should send a cover letter and résumé; their three best writing samples; and a friendly e-mail explaining why they want to write for the Pitch and what area (food, news, music/nightlife/arts, or web development/social media) most interests them.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty:
Intern
The Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty Internship program offers meaningful work experiences for university students and recent graduates. Our Internship Program supports Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's mission by providing independent journalism experience to young people from our broadcast regions, who will return to their countries to practice good journalism. This program assists Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's outreach efforts as well as provides interns with an opportunity to develop their skills through practical experience, thus increasing their prospects for employment.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty offers a limited number of places for interns, which are filled subject to the current needs of our Divisions/Departments at our corporate headquarters in Washington, DC and our broadcasting headquarters in Prague. The internship usually lasts between one and three months. Maximum length of internships in the Prague office is 90 days; Washington may offer a longer internship period.

Interns can support the work of the following Divisions/Departments within Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty: Finance Division, Broadcasting Division (Central Newsroom, Language Services, etc.), Operations Division (Human Resources, Technology, etc.), Communications Dept., and the Office of the President.

University students or recent graduates are eligible. Applicants should always have a working knowledge of English, both oral and written. Working experience in the field of expertise is not necessarily required; however, demonstrated experience or interest in the area in which the intern is seeking placement considered a plus. Knowledge of one of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's broadcasting languages is a major advantage.

Interns who are not receiving an internship stipend from their universities can apply to receive a modest internship stipend; however, all costs incurred with the intern's stay in one of the above-mentioned locations including travel/flights, housing accommodations, health insurance, etc.) will be borne directly by the intern and/or other external sources. Interns are responsible for all arrangements connected with obtaining proper documentation authorizing their stay in the US or in the CR (e.g. Visa). Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty will provide invitation letters, if required. An internship does not in any way constitute a commitment to future employment with RFE/RL.

For employment consideration, applicants should: Send either the 1) completed Internship Application or 2) a Structured Curriculum Vitae (see outline) and a short essay, explaining how their interest or future employment pursuits align with the mission of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, as well as his/her motivation for completing an internship at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Send applications to:
Washington DC Internships: DCInternships@rferl.org
Prague Internships: PRGInternships@rferl.org

We recommend that applications be sent well in advance before the desired period of internship.

Rhythm Engineering:
Social Media/Marketing Intern
Think you know social media? Sure you use it every day, but can you deliver business value for a company to be using it, too? We are looking for a two-person team of college interns to birth and nurture our social media marketing efforts.

We are always seeking out more local government traffic agencies to partner with, and social media marketing is an untapped channel for us. We need a pair of social media marketing experts to help us get up and running in this communication channel. You should be able to deliver recommendations and create sustainable execution/tactical methods and tools. When your internship with us is finished, we should be able to pick up seamlessly where you left off.
The team we choose will most likely be made up of two predominant skill sets (you need to apply as a team, not individually). One of you should be an editorial planner and content producer and curator. That person should be able to write at a professional level, quickly understand what our audience sees value in and scour third-party media for re-posting content. The content will be business-oriented and mildly technical.

The second person should be more of a technical architect, although not necessarily a web designer or programmer. He or she should be proficient in building an online framework to support the content, such as LinkedIn profiles, Facebook fan pages, Twitter accounts and tools, skinning our YouTube channel, posting to Slideshare, inclusion of Like and +1 buttons and whatnot on our web pages.  This person should also understand social media marketing metrics and how to track and report them. All infrastructure and content management tools should be built so our full-time team can take them over at the end of the summer internship.

What will you get out of this? First off, we hope it is fun and educational. You’ll also get to show people how you took a company with almost no social media presence, built one and produced measurable business results. It’s your own case study: real-world application of cutting-edge strategy and skills with actual results to prove your abilities.

You will work out of our Lenexa, Kansas, office with some of the most brilliant and enjoyable folks you’ll ever meet. Do a great job, and we’ll be a great reference for you in your future career pursuits. Finally, we will pay each of you $10 an hour, up to 40 hours a week.

Interested? Convince us that the two of you are the obvious choice. Your two-person team should impress us. Send your résumé, sample work, personal social media brands, initial ideas, your knowledge of best practices and trends, philosophies, concepts or whatever else. Send them to the contact provided below.

While Dot-com internships focus primarily on editing, rewrite, packaging and enhancing content, they also include designing the website to include conceptualizing and creating multimedia graphics, shooting and editing vide. Students with Flash and Action Scripting skills are especially urged to apply.

Standard minimum work commitment is 15-20 hours, two to three days a week for 12 weeks. Specific hours and days vary with assignments but may include evening and Sunday hours.

Applicants should have skills and traits in the following areas: Journalistic editing and headline writing skills; Strong and adaptable computer literacy skills and knowledge of digital imaging software and elementary HTML and interest in interactive media technology; Demonstrate an interest in, and knowledge of, current events; Ability to work quickly in a competitive and deadline-oriented news environment while exhibiting flexibility; Ability to conceptualize, package and present content in written and visual terms; Preference for an office environment; Willingness to work independently, welcome and solicit feedback, and work and communicate well with others as part of a team. Multimedia candidates should be familiar with programs like Avid, Final Cut Pro and/or CoolEdit. Graphics candidates should possess Macintosh skills with an understanding of Flash, HTML, and a proficiency in Freehand, Photoshop and/or Illustrator.

Responsibilities for interns vary with specific assignments but may include: Select, edit, publish stories; Learn how paper and Web interact; Research and edit photo galleries; Write headlines; Reporting/writing; produce charts and tables; Interact with public; Edit audio and/or video; Research, design graphics; Help produce special features.

To apply, all internship candidates must complete a USA TODAY employment application, and submit a résumé with three references and writing samples. These forms must be submitted to Brent Jones before the advertised deadline. Intern selections will be made by department managers, within the time period set by newsroom recruitment. Once selections are made, successful candidates will receive an offer letter from Marsha Clark. To apply, go to www.usatoday.com and click on the “jobs” link at the bottom of the home page. In your e-mail submission to our Newsroom Interns Box, include the following:

• A cover letter. At the top, indicate up to three prioritized preferences among the sections/specialties listed above, although internship offers may also be based on experience and newsroom needs. (Some sections secure more than one intern each term. If you are willing to work nights and/or weekends and have interests beyond News, Life, or Sports, you may have a greater likelihood of being selected.) Detail your skills, and indicate your availability (dates, days and hours). Estimate your school's expectations for hours of service weekly or for the term.
• Provide names and contact information for three references.
• Résumé
• For print: Attach three to five clips (in Word document, PDF or other MS-compatible format; no Web links)
• For Dot-com: Attach clips and/or include a link to your Website if you have one. Dot-com applicants should be ready to take a skills drill – the same one taken by job candidates – that will include writing headlines and summaries (briefs) and a test of current events or basic familiarity with the content covered by the sections of your choice.
