A list of the major projects being worked by Information Technology is provided below. Projects have been selected because they are either of interest to or will have a significant impact on the university community.

Wireless Projects
Students have expressed a great interest in having wireless service all across campus. A major project to provide access to classrooms and other student areas will be finished this summer. Other projects to provide wireless to Daisy Hill are under way.

1 GB Mailboxes for Students; Replace Exchange Clusters (return to top)
Servers are being built to accommodate students and faculty increasing the size of their e-mail mailbox from 500MB to 1GB. The architecture for the system is also being improved.

Blackboard Improvements: Blackboard Scholar (return to top)
Several tools are being implemented to enhance Blackboard. Blackboard Scholar is being implemented to support social bookmarking.

Blackboard Improvements: Wimba Voice Tools (return to top)
Several tools are being implemented to enhance Blackboard. Wimba Voice Tools allows both students and faculty to record and post audio clips in discussions and e-mail.

Deployment of Wireless Access Points across campus in classrooms/student areas to support student wireless access to the KU Network.

Class Roster Photo Enhancements (return to top)
In SAKU, professors have been given the ability to click on a student's name and view their photo. With this project, pictures of the entire classs roster will be available to view as a whole.

Dark Fiber (return to top)
Install and configure dark fiber equipment in the Kansas City POP and on the KU campus, and light the fiber to be operational.

Encryption: E-Mail (return to top)
As a part of the KU’s Information Management Program spearheaded by the Provost, certificates for e-mail encryption are being promoted. Although eventually intended for campus-wide use, areas with the most sensitive data are being targeted first.

Active and on schedule. The service is being rolled out to select groups.

Encryption: Whole Disk (return to top)
As a part of the KU’s Information Management Program spearheaded by the Provost, a service to support whole disk encryption is being launched. With an initial purchase of 250 licenses, the service is targeted to those on campus who work with the most sensitive data.

Active and on schedule. Beta testing will begin mid-September.

Enterprise Blackberry Server Roll-out (return to top)
This project will create a new enterprise-wide Blackberry service to campus.

On Hold. Final decisions on how best to move forward have not been made yet.

Expand Campus Access to New Document Management System (Xythos) (return to top)
Xythos is a document management system made available on a limited basis in February 2007 for the primary purpose of managing documents for the KU policy web site. The system is a complete, full functioning document management system, including a Records Management module and document workflow. This phase of deployment will focus on broadening access to more campus departments and implementing records management functionality in support of the campus Information Management Program initiative (http://www.provost.ku.edu/policy/infomanagement/).

Force Address Changes - SAKU (return to top)
Implementation of this project will require students to review and update their addresses and Emergency contact five times a year. Requirements completed.

Global Application for Admission (Nursing Pilot) (return to top)
Departments across campus have requested that a universal admissions application be developed for use campus-wide. This first phase will provide the new application to the Nursing school.

Oracle 10g Client Upgrade; Decommission Oracle Name Server (return to top)
This project was established to facilitate moving users of Oracle client software from earlier versions to Oracle Client 10g which enable the Oracle Name Server to be decommissioned.
Latest Status:
Active and on schedule. The Oracle Name Server is scheduled to be decommissioned September 25, 2008. A Web site has been created to provide information about upgrading to Oracle 10g Client.

Scholarship Halls Cable Path (return to top)
Establish new pathway to connect six scholarship halls south of 14th Street to existing IT fiber.
Latest Status:
Active and on schedule. Contract has been awarded, and work has started.

Implementation of wireless access in the following common areas of residential halls, as the Phase 1 rollout.
