SPSS 17.0 for Windows Installation Instructions

Installing from Download

  1. After downloading SPSS 17.0, double-click on the SPSS17.exe icon on the Desktop (or the folder you downloaded the file to) to extract the files to a folder. The default folder is C:\temp\spss17.

  2. Click on the Unzip button to start extracting the file into the folder specified.

  3. Click OK to return to the WinZip screen. Click the Close button to exit WinZip.

  4. To install SPSS, click on the Start button in the lower left corner of the Desktop. Click Run. In the resulting screen, type C:\temp\spss17 (if you downloaded SPSS from KU) and click OK to open the folder.

  5. Find the Setup.exe file and double-click it to start the installation.

  6. Continue with the installation using the instructions for installing from CD.

Installing from CD

  1. Click on Install SPSS Statistics 17.0.


  2. Choose Site license and click Next to continue.


  3. Click on I accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next to continue.


  4. The next screen contains useful information about New features and Features no longer supported.   Click Next when you’re ready to continue.


  5. At the next screen, type your name, organization (University of Kansas) and the serial number that was sent to you by email after you downloaded SPSS.  If you do not have the serial number and activation code, go to the KU SPSS download site and click on the appropriate link in the Activation Codes Only section.   Click Next after entering your information.

  6. At the next screen, you can choose whether to install help in your computer’s default language (usually English), or in other languages as well.   Make your choice and click Next to continue.

  7. Click Next to install SPSS in the default folder or click Change to install in a different folder.

  8. Click Install to begin the installation.

  10.  When the installation is complete, the following screen will appear.  UN-check the box at the bottom of the screen that says Register with SPSS.com and click OK to start the license authorization process.  If you do not have the activation code, go to the KU SPSS download site and click on the appropriate link in the Activation Codes Only section.

  11.  Make sure that License my product now is selected and press Next to continue.

  12.  At the Enter Codes screen, type the code that was sent to you when you downloaded the software and click Next to proceed.  If you do not have the activation code, go to the KU SPSS download site and click on the appropriate link in the Activation Codes Only section.

  13. If your code is accepted, the following screen will appear:

  14.   If you see the screen below, your software has been successfully installed and activated.  Click Finish to exit.
