Scholarship Information
Costs
As a part of the application process, applicants in F-1 or J-1 status must submit proof of financial support for the first year of study. Costs for attending KU depend on length of study and major. Current estimated expenses for the 2007-08 academic year range from $27,157 to $30,389, depending upon the major.
Scholarships
KU ISSS Admissions offers a limited number of non-renewable partial, merit-based scholarships for new undergraduate international students. KU also collaborates with the Institute of International Education (IIE) to award several large renewable tuition scholarships to new students with outstanding academic profiles who are entering the U.S. in F-1 or J-1 status in the Fall semester.
Priority deadlines for scholarship consideration are:
- December 1 for Fall semester (for students who have attended 3 years in US high school and will also graduate from a US high school),
- January 15 for Fall semester (for all other students)
- October 1 for Spring semester.
Eligibility requirements for scholarship consideration
Candidates for all international undergraduate scholarships will be notified only after they have been admitted to KU.
Recipients are selected from the top tier of students who have been admitted based upon their academic records from previous education. Selection is based on factors including:
- Grades--students must have the equivalent of a 3.5 GPA or higher (based upon the 4.0 scale)
- TOEFL and SAT scores
- Letters of reference or recommendation
- Essay or statement of purpose
KU Academic Program Scholarships
Some KU academic departments also offer scholarships to first year students. If a student is eligible for consideration, the ISSS Admissions Office will forward the student's application to departments that have scholarships. Generally, departmental scholarships are competitive and top-level students are informed of opportunities to apply by the individual academic program only after the student has been admitted.
