Coming to KU

Registering for Classes

When selecting your classes, it is important to keep in mind the stipulations of your academic program.  For this reason, we recommend meeting with an academic advisor before you enroll.  Find out where to go for advising here: http://www.iss.ku.edu/prearrival/advising.shtml

To see a list of classes that will be offered at KU for the upcoming semester, visit www.classes.ku.edu.  All classes are named after a particular code.  This code represents the department and subject area of the class.  You can find a list of codes and abbreviations here: http://www2.ku.edu/~advptl/codes/.  Before you enroll, take a look at the semester class schedule to get an idea of potential classes that suit your interests or academic goals.  Make sure that the classes you select are compatible with your program requirements.

When selecting your classes, it is also important to keep in mind the type of schedule you would like to have during the semester.  A few questions to consider:

  • Would you prefer classes in the morning, afternoon, or evening times?
  • If you are living off-campus, does the bus to your housing run as late as your classes do?
  • Do you have long breaks in between classes?
  • If you are a GTA or GRA, does your schedule allow enough time for you to work?
  • Are all of your classes at the KU Lawrence campus? (The Edwards campus is one hour away by bus)
  • How many students can enroll in your classes? Are you more comfortable with large-sized or small-sized classrooms?
  • Have you left yourself enough time for homework each week?

Once you have chosen your schedule with the help of an advisor and have gone through the required check-ins for new international students, visit http://sa.ku.edu to access the KU Enroll & Pay system. This page will require you to login with your KU online ID (this is not your student ID number). If you do not have an online ID, you can  online or wait to have an ISSS advisor help you during the ISSS check-in process.  You can find links to setting up your KU Online ID and using Enroll & Pay on our Pre-Arrival website (http://www.iss.ku.edu/prearrival/index.shtml).

Students taking AEC classes will enroll through the AEC.  If your visit to KU is coordinated through the Office of Study Abroad, you must meet with that office to be advised and enroll.

Questions about enrolling in classes should be directed to your academic advisor or the Registrar's Office (1-785-864-4423 or kuregistrar@ku.edu).

Enrollment Requirement for International Students

F-1 and J-1 international students must be enrolled in a full course of study each regular term. Generally, international undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours, and international graduate students are required to be enrolled in 9 credit hours.

If, for any reason, you do not meet these requirements or are planning to drop below the minimum hours required, you must first speak with an ISSS advisor, or you will risk falling out of status. You will receive more information about this at your ISSS check-in.

Fee Payment and Late Fee

View the payment deadlines with the Registrar's academic calendar.  Students who enroll on or after the first day of classes will be assessed a $150 late enrollment fee.  You can find more information about paying for KU on our website (at http://www.iss.ku.edu/prearrival/financial-info.shtml)
All questions about paying for KU should be directed to the Bursar’s Office (1-785-3322 or bursar@ku.edu).
