Get a Travel Signature
If you are planning to travel out of the U.S. during Spring Break, please remember to bring your I-20 or your DS-2019* to the ISSS Office to obtain a travel signature.
Since there are many people requesting travel signatures, you should plan to leave your document at the ISSS office overnight. Typically, it will be ready for you to pick up after 24 hours.
*Persons with a DS-2019 issued by a sponsor other than KU will need to obtain the signature from their program sponsor noted in section #2 of the DS-2019.)
Have Valid Passport and Visa
You must have a passport valid at least 6 months into the future and a valid visa appropriate to your status for reentry.
If you need to apply for a new visa, you may only do so from outside of the U.S. Visit the website of the U.S. consulate post where you will apply for the visa for specific requirements of that post. Links to U.S. consulates and embassies worldwide can be accessed at <http://www.travel.state.gov/visa/questions_embassy.html>
Travel Letters Due to Hacking Incident Spring 2003
If you were admitted or enrolled spring 2003, it is still recommended that you obtain an ISSS travel letter to help verify your identity when reentering the U.S. Request this letter from the ISSS reception desk. If you are uncertain whether or not this situation applies to you, the reception desk can assist you in making this determination. Please allow 24 hours for the preparation of the letter.
Special Registration
Students flagged for Special Registration upon entry to the U.S. must leave through a designated port of departure and register their departure before exiting the U.S. Failure to do so may forfeit eligibility for re-entry to the U.S. For additional details on this process and a list of designated ports, visit
http://www.ice.gov/pi/specialregistration/index.htm
Are You Traveling Handout
ISSS has a helpful handout titled “Are You Traveling?” with other travel tips that you may wish to pick up before you leave.
