Always maintain a valid Form I-20 during your stay in the U.S. The ending date item #5 on your Form I-20 is 
the date by which you are expected to complete your studies. 

Eligibility
Any F-1 student who has continually maintained status and who has a compelling academic, medical or other 
reason(s) for not completing the educational program by the completion date (#5)on the I-20 is eligible for a 
Program Extension. A "compelling reason" may include such things as a change of major or research topic, 
unexpected research problems, or a documented illness, which has interfered with full-time study. 
Academic suspension and probation are not considered acceptable reasons for a Program Extension.

When to Apply
If you need more time to finish your degree beyond the date in item #5, please submit the required documents 
listed below. Extensions must be processed before the completion date on your current I-20. We recommend
that you submit your extension paperwork within the semester that your I-20 expires.  Forms are also 
available in ISSS office.

Required Documents
Please make an appointment with an ISSS advisor to submit the following:

• Completed F-1 Program Extension Academic Advisor Recommendation
• Current Form I-20
• Passport, visa, I-94 card
• Proof of financial support for the requested extension period

Reminder: Extension of stay in the United States is the student’s responsibility. If a student forgets the deadline and applies late, he/she risk denial of the application and will be considered out of status. If a student is employed and overlooks the date, they are considered to have engaged in illegal employment. Such mistakes can have serious consequences, therefore students should make certain that they apply in a timely manner.
