    Citizens of certain countries traveling to Canada or Mexico for tourism may or may not need a Canadian or Mexican visa. Since ISSS is not familiar with Canadian or Mexican laws regarding visa requirements, please contact the appropriate Canadian Consulate or Mexican Consulate for information before traveling.

    Visa Information in Canada or Mexico

    Canada
    All Third Country Nationals (TCNs) currently in the U.S. interested in applying for a U.S. nonimmigrant visa in Canada must make an appointment through the Visa Appointment Reservation System, either online or by telephone. For more information please visit: http://nvars.com/. U.S. Consular offices are located in Calgary, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec City, Toronto, and Vancouver.

    Mexico
    All Third Country Nationals (TCNs) currently in the U.S. interested in applying for a U.S. nonimmigrant visa in Mexico must make an appointment first. Information and appointments are available through VisaPoint self-service website or by speaking with an operator through the telephone service option. U.S. Consular offices are located in Ciudad Juarez, Matamoros, Nogales, Nuevo Laredo, and Tijuana.

    Who Can Apply in Mexico
    The following TCN applicants MAY APPLY for a visa in Mexico by scheduling an appointment:

    • Renewals of C1/D, D, F, H, I, J, L, M, O, P, and R visas, if the intial visa was issued in the applicant's home country or at one of the border posts in the past few years.
    • Applications for visas that reflect a change of status (e.g. F1 to H1B or F1 to J1) if the applicant has the original change of status notice (I-797) from DHS and the applicant originally entered the U.S. in other than B status.
    • Applications for those with a B visa issued in their home country that includes an annotation indicating they are entering the U.S. with an intent to change visa type, such as "Prospective Student."

    Who Cannot Apply in Mexico
    The following TCN applicants MAY NOT APPLY for a visa in Mexico by scheduling an appointment. Please apply in your home country or country of last residence outside of the U.S.:

    • Applicants who entered the U.S. with a B visa issued in their home country that changed status to another visa category, e.g., F, J, H1B, but the visa did not have an annotation indicating intent to change visa type.
    • You may not apply in Mexico if you have been out of status in the U.S. because of a violation of the terms of your visa or overstayed the validity indicated on your I-94 card.
    • A, B, E, G, and Q visa applications, including renewals are not accepted from TCNs that are not resident in the appropriate consular district.
    • Applications are not accepted from citizens of Iran, Sudan, Libya, Iraq, North Korea,Cuba, and Syria.
