J-1: School Transfer
All degree-seeking J-1 students, currently in the U.S. who plan to change program sponsor must complete the transfer procedure through SEVIS.
Transfer from KU to Another Program Sponsor
Students transferring out of KU need to complete the transfer-out procedures:
- Notify KU-ISSS of your intention to transfer out;
- Complete ISSS's Transfer-Out Signature form from the j-1 form section
- Meet with an ISSS advisor to discuss the release date of your SEVIS record to the new program sponsor;
- The "Transfer Release Date" is the date on which your SEVIS record will electronically transfer to the new sponsor. The new sponsor cannot issue their DS-2019 until after this release date.
On or after the transfer release date, you cannot change the request in any way and you cannot continue to work on campus after the release date (unless it is approved Academic Training). Should you wish to return to KU it may be necessary for you to apply for readmission if you have been gone for a semester or more.
Transfer to University of Kansas
Please complete the following transfer-in procedures:
- Get admitted to the University of Kansas;
- Notify your current program sponsor of your intent to transfer;
- Complete ISSS's Transfer-In Intent form from the j-1 form section, after you've been admitted and you have chosen to attend KU;
- Have the Responsible Officer or Alternate Responsible Office (RO/ARO) of your current program sponsor complete Section 2 of the Transfer-In Intent form found in the j-1 form section.
- If you are transferring from U.S. Govt program sponsor (fee-exempt program) to KU (non-fee-exempt J program), you will need to pay the SEVIS fee prior to completing the transfer.
- After you and your program sponsor have determined the date to have your SEVIS record electronically released to KU, promptly return the Transfer-In Intent form to KU-ISSS.
- After the release date, KU-ISSS will produce an DS-2019. ISSS CANNOT produce KU DS-2019 until after the release date submitted by your current program sponsor.
