Information Services Policies & Policy Development
Policies that address information, information technology, and security issues are needed to
promote effective management of technical infrastructure and resources, and are frequently
driven by the need to mitigate risks and other negative consequences that emerge due to rapid
technological change. In some cases, policies enable KU to demonstrate compliance
with certain laws and standards.

Process for Developing Policy
Policies initiated by
Information Services for the KU-Lawrence campus (which includes the Edwards Campus) follow a routine development process including drafting, routing for comment, and obtaining signature approval. Comments gathered inform revision of policies, and
Information Services works with adversely-impacted groups to proactively address concerns
while still ensuring the original policy need is met.
In cases of high priority or emergency situations, the Vice Provost for Information Services and Chief Information Officer, after appropriate consultation
with the Provost and General Counsel, may implement an interim information technology policy on a temporary basis as the proposed policy goes through the approval process.
