Teaching American History: Searching for America

The Federally funded Teaching American History Grant entitled “Searching for America” is designed for all Garden City, Kansas teachers. The anticipated goal of this professional development project is for the Garden City students to attain essential content knowledge of American historical narratives and a broad range of historical thinking skills with which they can develop, explore, question, and enrich their understanding of present day United States. Increasing teachers’ historical content knowledge that will build confidence in their ability to interpret and teach about America does this.

Twenty-five teachers are selected each year for an intensive summer workshop. The grant continues for five years.

Garden City Public Schools has the following partners in the grant in addition to The Institute: KU History Department; Finney County Historical Museum; and Finney County Public Library.
