Documenting Cherokee (CHR) Tone and Vowel Length
The overall goal of the Documenting Cherokee Tone and Vowel Length project is to accurately represent both tone and vowel length for each entry in the 9,000-entry digital Cherokee Electronic Dictionary (CED). The CED, a current project supported by the Cherokee Nation Education Corporation, is currently the largest, single source for Cherokee words in citation form and in sentential contexts. An important outcome of the project will be the addition to the CED of diacritic markings of Cherokee tone and vowel length on three writing systems: the International Phonetic Alphabet, the historic Sequoyah Cherokee Syllabary and a commonly used "Near Phonemic Alphabet" based on Romanized script. Other projected outcomes include: training for Cherokee speakers in documentary linguistics, the addition of a second citation form recording for each entry in the CED, and the development and pilot testing of materials and lessons for using the CED to teach tone in actual Cherokee language classrooms.
