Science is Everywhere!
A selected group of 7th graders from Wyandotte County who are participants of the KU Talent Search Program have been meeting once a month to learn about SCIENCE! The first Saturday of every month twenty-five 7th graders and several volunteers come together to explore the world of science. In partnership with the F.L. Schlagle Environmental Center (Wyandotte County Lake Park in KCK) and KU Talent Search, several scientists/staff, and students participate in a variety of STEM activities. Students engage in hands-on science experiments like dissecting frogs, bird banding, and examining rocks and minerals. They learn about the ecosystem, insects, plants, and watersheds. In addition, college students from the UKanTeach Program within the School of Education have served as instructors during the November and December Science Academy. This collaborative project makes science even more fun and interesting for the students. This academy began in October 2010 and will end in May 2011 with a celebration and science presentations by the students. This is the third year of the KU Science Academy and this project is funded by the KU Talent Search Program, College Access Challenge Grant, and by in-kind contributions from local scientists, UKanTeach students, and the F.L. Schlagle Environmental Center.
