Looking for CLUEs - Children's Literature and Economics

The KU Center for Economic Education, through support from the Calvin K. Kazanjian Foundation and the Council for Economic Education, has developed and launched a web-based, interactive database of annotated children's literature that can be used to teach economic concepts in grades K-6.

The new website, Classroom CLUEs (Children's Literature for Understanding Economics), makes it easy for teachers to find book recommendations and lessons to teach elementary students the important concepts and skills for decision-making, personal finance, and learning about a market economy.

Teachers can use the CLUEs website to look up books by title, economic concept or subject.

For example:

A 4th grade teacher is doing a unit on personal finance. She finds over 50 books on the Classroom CLUEs website that she can choose from to help teach such concepts as: money and banking, saving, spending, taxes and opportunity cost.

A 5th grade teacher wants to teach his students about costs and benefits. He uses the Classroom CLUEs website to find lessons for teaching this concept using the books, From The Mixed-up Files Of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler and Old Henry.

A 2nd grade teacher uses the book, Pancakes, Pancakes, in a unit on Nutrition. The title is on the district’s core Literature list and students have always loved this book. She learns about the Classroom CLUEs site as a resource to look up Pancakes, Pancakes to find lessons and ideas for teaching second graders about goods and services, specialization and productive resources.
