Hernandez-Castro named KU Unclassified Employee of the Year

Congratulations to Alejandra (Alex) Hernandez-Castro, who recently was named the University of Kansas Unclassified Employee of the Year.

Hernandez-Castro, Recruitment Coordinator for the Harvest of Hope Leadership Academy, was honored with the award in recognition of the work that she does on behalf of some of the state’s most vulnerable students.  Hernandez-Castro puts in many hours and miles across Kansas to make personal connections with migrant high school students and their families and serves as a role-model and caring advocate for these students.

The Harvest of Hope Leadership Academy (HHLA) is a free, 3-week summer academic enrichment program at KU that serves migrant-eligible high school students.  The program helps students strengthen learning strategies, explore and practice leadership skills, and gain knowledge and skills to graduate from high school and pursue a college education.

The award is individually prestigious and reflects positively on the important advocacy work of all of the School of Education’s Educational Opportunity Programs. HHLA is an Educational Opportunity Program within the Institute for Educational Research and Public Service in the School of Education at the University of Kansas. HHLA is funded by the Kansas Migrant Education Program, Kansas Department of Education.

The Institute exists to assist School of Education faculty in their pursuit of external funding and to serve the State of Kansas. Major programs areas are:
Educational Opportunity Programs
Faculty Research and Service
Professional Development
