6th Grade Wheat State College Tour

The KU Talent Search Program sponsored their 2nd Annual Wheat State College Tour for a selected group of 6th graders from Kansas City, KS.  Forty students explored universities and colleges in Kansas for 3 days in July.  These students spent a week at the University of Kansas participating in the Talent Search’s Career Horizons Summer Camp in June.  As a bonus learning opportunity, students took off of for their first ever college tour!  Student learned about the college process, how to pay for college, and what colleges have to offer!  Students visited Washburn University, Bethany College, Friends University and Kansas State University. In addition, they engaged in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities.  They looked for salt in the Hutchinson, KS Underground Salt Mines, learned about snot, body odor, and saliva at the Exploration Place in Wichita (GROSSOLOGY: The Impolite Science of the Human Body), and learned about space at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center.  Students and staff had a memorable and educational trip, and one that certainly made a difference in the lives of these young students!  Their dream of going to college is one step closer.  This college preparation tour would not have been possible without funding from the KS College Access Challenge Grant.
