
Western Civilization Enrollment Information
The Western Civilization requirement can be fulfilled in several ways:
- Lecture/discussion combination: Lecture-hall course that breaks into discussion groups of around 20 students on Thursday or Friday. HWC 204 lecture is offered each fall; HWC 205 lecture is offered each spring.
- Independent sections: MWF for 50 minutes or TTh for 75 minutes. These are smaller classes (around 35) and have no separate discussion component. Offered fall, spring, and summer.
- Honors Western Civilization I and II: HWC 114 and HWC 115. Taught by HWC faculty members.
- Semester abroad program in Florence and Paris Includes courses on modern Europe and art history.
- HWC 115/205 on campus, with Spring Break in London
- Through the Center for Online and Distance Learning. This is a semester-based course that is entirely online. Enrollment is by permission only.
- Through transfer credit.A limited number of Kansas and Missouri community colleges offer courses whose content most closely follows our KU courses and are approved for equivalent credit. These approved courses can be confirmed on KU’s Credit Transfer. If in doubt about whether a course is approved you are advised to contact the HWC office.
