The Populist March of Annie Diggs

Characterization through narration and dance

Thu., Sep. 11, 2008, 4:00pm - 5:00pm
Location: Elizabeth Sherbon Dance Theatre, Robinson Gymnasium, 1301 Sunnyside Ave., Room 240,
Annie Diggs (1848-1916) played a prominent role as a Kansas-based journalist, orator, and political organizer for Woman's Suffrage, the Farmers' Alliance, the Populist (People's) Party, and many other causes. The thread that joins all of these causes together was her quest for a more equitable distribution of wealth and power.

Joan Stone calls upon her long experience as a dance historian, choreographer, and performer to portray Annie through narration and dance. Before performing, she'll introduce her characterization by talking about dance as a measure of history and about how and why she came up with the gestures to go with the text.

A graduate of Sarah Lawrence and Yale, Stone taught dance history and choreography at KU until her retirement in 2006. She has performed and taught in Europe, Tajikistan, India, and China, as well as in the United States. The Populist March of Annie Diggs brings together ideas that have preoccupied Stone for many years: dance and politics, women as history makers, the progressive era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the relationship between gesture and word.
