Visit to the Spencer Museum of Art
New Generation Society of Lawrence (NGSL members only)

Thu., Apr. 18, 2013, 4:00pm - 5:30pm
Location: Spencer Museum of Art, 1301 Mississippi

The Spencer Museum has commissioned internationally recognized fiber artists Ann Hamilton and Cynthia Schira to create room-sized installations of textiles in the galleries.  They will use digital technology to explore the nature of cloth and the ways Museums organize and maintain material legacies.  They will transform several galleries with their installations and will employ images of actual objects from the Museum's permanent collection as well as the actual objects.  It will be a fascinating look into a little known aspect of art.  Because of the fragile nature of materials, textiles are not usually exhibited for any length of time.  So this will be a special treat for New Generation members.

Ann Hamilton came to KU in 1976 to study fiber arts with retired Professor Cynthia Schira.  She is now collaborating with her former professor to produce this work.  Our guide will be Susan Earle, curator at the Spencer who has given several programs for New Generation members.
