Ethnographers, oral historians, and other scholars who engage in social and cultural analysis often write with a primarily academic audience in mind. But many who do this kind of work are also accountable to another audience, which may or may not overlap with the academic one: the people scholars write about. How do you negotiate your academic careers alongside your roles in the communities you study? How do these different audiences impact your approaches to writing and publishing? This presentation will draw on Stephanie Krehbiel's ethnographic research on conflicts over sexual diversity within Mennonite communities, discussing her personal experiences in fieldwork situations, Mennonite responses to her written work about those experiences, and the ways in which those responses continue to shape her analysis.
