"The Promise of Happiness"
Humanities Lecture Series

Location: Woodruff Auditorium, Kansas Union
This event is free and open to the public.

Sara Ahmed is Professor in Race & Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths College, University of London. The author of more than 30 articles and book chapters and four books including The Cultural Politics of Emotion (2004) and Differences that Matter: Feminist Theory and Postmodernism (1998), she works at the intersection between feminist theory, critical race and postcolonial theory and queer studies. She is interested in how difference, otherness and strangeness become ?properties? of bodies through actions, words, perceptions, feelings and judgments.

Ahmed?s research explores how happiness works as a promise that directs us towards certain objects as if they provide the necessary ingredients for a good life. The very promise of happiness ? if you do this, then happiness will follow ? is what makes certain things seem ?promising.? In posing these questions, Ahmed?s research investigates how feminist, queer and anti-racist politics work by exposing the ?unhappy effects? of the promise of happiness and how they open up alternative models of what might count as a good life.

The Humanities Lecture Series, begun in 1947, is the oldest continuing series at the University of Kansas and one of the most distinguished lecture series in the Midwest. The goal of the series is to bring scholars and artists to campus whose work encompasses or redefines central problems in the humanities, and who can frame their intellectual concerns so as to reach a multi-disciplinary audience including students, faculty and interested community members.

The Series is presented by The Hall Center for the Humanities. For more information about the Hall Center or the Lecture Series, contact us at (785) 864-4798 or hallcenter@ku.edu or visit our web site at www.hallcenter.ku.edu.
