Quilts: Flora Botanica

Selections from the Spencer Museum Collection
New Generation Society of Lawrence (NGSL members only)

Tue., Sep. 23, 2008, 4:00pm - 5:30pm
Location: Spencer Museum of Art, 1301 Mississippi
Floral images have been among the most popular images with American quilt makers. There will be approximately 30 quilts from the collection in many classic patchwork designs. Two important and difficult to exhibit quilts, which feature three-dimensional embroidery known as "stump work" will be on display. A pair of quilts, one from 1850 and one from 1930, will showcase master quilt maker Rose Kretsinger's use of the museum's quilt collection in the early 20th century. Kretsinger, of Emporia, Kansas, has several quilts in the Spencer collection. This will be a wonderful opportunity to view a cross section of the Spencer's large quilt collection. We will have a tour for approximately 50 minutes and conversation and refreshments following at a reception.
