"A Conversation on Promotion and Tenure"

Wed., Nov. 12, 2003, 3:30pm - 5:00pm
Location: Malott Room, Kansas Union
Panelists: David Shulenburger, Provost & Executive Vice Chancellor; Danny Anderson, Professor & Chair, Spanish & Portuguese; Lindsay Waters, Executive Editor for the Humanities, Harvard University Press; Sherrie Tucker, Assistant Professor, American Studies Program

? How well are the criteria for promotion and tenure working in the selection of tenured faculty and in the kinds of research humanities scholars produce?

? Should the published book be the "gold standard" for tenure?

? Should online books be incorporated into the criteria for tenure?

? Do the criteria for tenure result in first books that are highly specialized and non-marketable?

? Have tenure committees turned over the decision of evaluating professors to university presses?

? Do the tenure criteria deter from collaborative research?

We all have strong views on these issues. This is surely a conversation we need to have.
