Location: Bus departs Lied Center
Travel with us to Western Kansas for an exciting two days of history of the Old West. Our bus will take us to Larned on Wednesday, April 20th. We will first eat lunch at the Santa Fe Trail Restaurant and then we will tour the Santa Fe Trail Museum. Next, we will drive the few miles to Ft. Larned where the National Park Rangers will treat us to an extensive tour. This historic Fort sits alongside the old Santa Fe Trail which was originally set up to protect settlers from the hostile Indians of the Central Plains. It is the only such fort whose buildings are original and intact. A visit to this National Historic Site will take you back to a turbulent era in our nation?s history. In the late afternoon, we will drive to Hays and stay at the Holiday Inn. Dinner that night will be at the Roof Tops Restaurant.
At 8:30 on Thursday morning we will meet Dr. Edward Hammond, President of Fort Hays State University at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History. After a brief welcome by Dr. Hammond, we will be given a tour of this famous museum with a variety of exhibitions.
Later, we will have a tour o the university campus and be hosted to lunch by the University and Dr. Hammond.
We will leave Hays at 1:00 pm and drive to Victoria, Kansas to see and tour the famous Cathedral of the Plains, a magnificent Catholic church built by German settlers. We will start back to Lawrence around 3:00 pm arriving at the Lied Center around 6:30 pm.
