Independent American theater director JoAnne Akalaitis is described as one of the "best and brightest of prominent American theater directors" and as one who has helped to change the face and focus of American theater. Akalaitis has won numberous awards including five Obies for direction. In the world of drama, she has done it all: acting, directing, designing, writing, and teaching. She also co-founded Mabou Mines, the internatinally recognized experimental theater troupe begun in 1970.

Akalaitis met with the Faculty Colloquium on Performance and conducted a workshop on movement for faculty, graduate and undergraduate students during her time at KU.
