Born in Estonia, Ivar Ivask is a universal poet whose poetry evokes Paris, Castille, Venice, Tuscany, Naxos, Vienna, and even Oklahoma.

In addition to his poetic and critical activity, Ivar Ivask founded in 1970 an international review of literature, Books Abroad, later World Literature Today. He also chaired the Association for Advancement of Baltic Studies, which he founded.
