Cornel West, Professor of Religion and Director of African American Studies at Princeton University, was the Frances and Floyd Horowitz Lecturer for 1994. West has published seven books, most recently the widely-noted Race Matters (1993), a commentary on the racial dilemma of contemporary American society. West is a leading intellectual spokesperson in the national African American community.

During his visit to KU, West also participated in a colloquium entitled "Race Matters."
